Science Hack Day SF
November 13-14, 2010 in Palo Alto
(Registration for Science Hack Day SF is now closed)
Science Hack Day SF kicks off on Saturday! Here's everything you need to know about the event:
• Arriving: Please show up at Institute For The Future (124 University Ave. in Palo Alto) between 9:30am and 10:30am on Saturday (we'll be kicking things off at 10:30am). See the schedule for the lowdown on what happens after that. The nearest Caltrain stop to the venue is Palo Alto.
• Drop-outs: We have a waitlist of people who would like to attend - so if you know already that you're unable to make it to the event, please reply to let us know so we can offer your space to someone else.
• Preload your datasets: Those of you working with especially large datasets - try to have them downloaded/ready before arriving so as not to clog the tubes for others.
• Bring: Bring your hacking tools of choice: laptop, toolbox, arduinos, science kits, various materials, your imagination (lab coats optional). We'll supply: power, wireless network, hacking space, meals, snacks, stimulation (of the intellectual kind) and a few toolkits from Techshop.
• Talks: After the introductory talks, we'll have quick 15-minute sessions in 3 separate meeting rooms for those who want to discuss a project idea or platform to hack on. Interested in leading a discussion around your project idea? We'll have 8 open slots you can sign up for when you arrive (first come, first serve).
• Food: Food and drink will be provided for you. Breakfast and lunches will be delivered from Panera. Saturday night dinner will be delivered from Pasta Q.
• Sleeping Over: Although it's called Science Hack Day, it goes right through Saturday night and into Sunday. But you don't need to worry about where to spend the night: you can stay at the venue, coding and mashing up to your hearts' content. If you want to get some sleep, please bring a sleeping bag. That’s what makes it so much fun — it’s like a big geek slumber party. If you're already planning on spending the night at the venue - please reply to this email so we can get a rough headcount.
• Most of all, have fun! If you're nervous because you don't have any specific ideas of what to do — or you've never been to a hack day before — don't worry: there will be plenty of people with ideas who will need your skills. It's an incredibly rewarding experience to form an ad-hoc team to spend 24 hours creating something crazy and exciting.
If you have any other questions, feel free to email Ariel Waldman or ask the question on Twitter with a @sciencehackday mention.
