BRAINSTORM IDEAS:

Use this wiki to brainstorm ideas or pitch projects to work on.  If you want some inspiration peruse ideas from previous Science Hack Days or check out the ongoing list of science-related APIsdatasets and useful programming tools/frameworks

Available Tools: Methane sensors, electronics toolkits, water quality sensors, possibly 3D printers with filaments, rooms with projection/audio/video capabilities.

Everyone is encouraged to bring their own tools, just use your best judgement on what to bring because you will need to fit it through an x-ray machine and this is a federal building!

Theme/Category

 Data Visualization, Inventory, CartoDB

Idea

Pull data from the Federal Inventory of Citizen Science and Crowdsourcing (http://ccsinventory.wilsoncenter.org/browse) and create an infographic or interactive display to highlight government achievements in the realm of open participation models.

Tools/Datasets

Raw data from CartoDB. SciStarter database.

Comments & Questions

What if we combined the inventory data with the congressional budget?

Collecting leaf samples from the top of forest canopies for earth science research

Theme/Category

Science, earth science, robotics

Idea

Earth scientists need to be able to collect samples of leaves from the top of trees in the forests to accurately monitor and understand how forests purify our air.  Can we develop a cost-effective and efficient method to help them do so?

Hacking the Human Mind

Theme/Category

Artificial Intelligence

Idea

What if we combined information from thought/belief models with other forms of data in order to find out how humans affect their world and how they are affected in turn?

Examples:

Correlate news data with financial data

Simulate how we could improve response to a particular conflict in the world

Identifying under served neighborhoods with Yelp.com data

Theme/Category

Data Science and Mapping

Idea

  • Find out what people are passionate about (via positive and negative reviews)
  • Try to discover who these people are (via census demographics)--I am not sure where to find the census data.
  • Plot the businesses and demographic clusters on a map, and try to discover neighborhoods that are under served.

Citizen Social Science and Crowdsourcing Migration Forecaster

Theme/Category

Data Visualization, Inventory

Idea

What if we combined the inventory, historical and methodical data to attempt to predict human migration pattern to save lives.

Pull data from the Federal Inventory of Citizen Science and Crowdsourcing (http://ccsinventory.wilsoncenter.org/browse) and create an infographic or interactive display to highlight government achievements.

Pull data from Deagel.com (http://www.deagel.com/country/forecast.aspx) to obtain real-time Government spending rates and patterns to identify any anomalies that may encourage mitigation.

Pull data from Berkeley applied Demography Toolbox (http://www.demog.berkeley.edu/~eddieh/toolbox.html) to obtain statistical data on population, birth rate and basic worldwide demographics.

Pull data from World Meteorological Organization’s Severe Weather Information Centre (http://severe.worldweather.wmo.int//), The Weather Channel (http://www.weather.com/) and NOAA (http://www.noaa.gov/) to obtain real-time as well as projection weather reports.

Optimizing urban cycling commuter routes

Theme

Data Science, Mapping, Programming, Cycling

Idea

Nothings worse then hitting red light after red light over and over again. For a car, sitting through several light cycles might be normal due to physical congestion of other cars. But for bicycles, most waiting at a red will make it through the next green cycle.  And nothing is more satisfying then catching a straightaway of all green lights(assuming cyclists dont run red lights).  Signal timing data is not public(as far as I know), so the idea is to develop a standardized method of collecting data of light timing from ground users(cyclists) through an app, and compiling said data to create optimized cycle routes with minimum stoppage. This data can be weighed against routes without lights, average commute times, and common hotspots-data which can also be collected direct from user. This especially can be useful for longer distance commuters who may have a standard route to work every day.

Data "Audio"ization of running cadence

Theme

Biomechanics, Kinesiology, Data Visualization, Sound design, (Art?)

Idea

Attach sensor or force plates to different areas of a running shoe to give a separate audio feedback depending on the area of strike and/or ground reaction forces.  Different noises depending on area of footstrike can  provide a feedback loop to the runner(via headphones), and help to identify running mechanics(forefoot? midfoot? heel striker?).  At the least, it would be a fun sound/art project to collect from different physical activities( agility drills, sprinters, long distance runners, etc...)
